Quotes and Cookies: Read Without Effort

Because so many people are either working so hard at writing or working so hard at editing right now, possibly wondering if all the really hard work is worth it, this quote is for you:

"When something can be read without effort,
great effort has gone into its writing."

~Enrique Jardiel Poncela

I think it's a great reminder that not only does really great writing take A LOT of work, but it definitely is worth it to every person who will read it.

And as you're putting such great effort into your writing, have a cookie! These remind me of both the blue skies we had here yesterday, the snow we're supposed to have tomorrow. Plus, someone put great effort into making these! They're like the culinary equivalent of a really great scene.

So what about you? Have you been putting great effort into your writing this week? Or have you read a book lately that could be read without effort? I'd love to hear about it!

Happy NaNo-ing, writing, revising, playing, relaxing, to-do listing, quality-timing, or whatever else you have planned this weekend!

Mucho amounts of effort! E for effort! Maybe an F for actual production...but E for effort:)

Those cookies look like Tammy made them! Or, at least we know she could. :) Curse you, Peggy. You make me want cookies every Friday!

Anytime there's cookies around, I'm there. Wonderful quote. Writing my NaNo project, I feel like I'm not putting as great an effort as I usually do. I like to take more time on my first drafts. So I've been a little freaked about the mess. <3

I'm in the thick of editing right now (NaNoRevMo 4-eva!) and it's amazing how long one can agonize about just the right word, paragraph break, sentence structure...and how it can make all the difference.

Those cookies are so beautiful they make me want to cry. or maybe I'm just emotional. :)

yup, putting in everything I got this month. Great quote! Hopefully mine will end up that way soon.

Oh, lots of effort. Head-banging, brain-bleeding effort. It's called 'revision', but there's been a hell of a lot of new writing going into this one.

Those cookies look too pretty to eat.

I didn't put a lot of effort into writing this week, but I'm also not doing NaNo. I am, however, doing the last revisions of my book, Net Switch, which derived from 2008 NaNoWriMo.

Happy Friday!

Those cookies are so pretty! Love the quote :)

That quote was very on point and the cookies induced excitment for sweets. Must go satisfy it :-)

I'm NaNoing away, such a fun yet sort of exhausting experience, but it feels so worth it.

By the way, you have a blog award over at my blog: http://publishness.blogspot.com/2011/11/where-did-all-good-words-go.html

...Sorry...sorry...writing is cookie...

See what you've done to me now?!

yes, yes, working hard
now give me a cookie!

I'm going to stop revising for three minutes, just to stare at those cookies. :)

Have a great weekend!

This week I've been doing that painful part of editing. The one where the story's together, but each and every sentence needs to be looked at. Examined. Made to flow . . .

It's EXHAUSTING.

And I don't think I could eat a cookie that pretty.

I love your quotes. They always inspire me at the right moments!

I love that quote!!
I think my effort is going into word count this month ;)

Love the quote! But now I want cookies. ;)

What a great quote! And will you be bringing those cookies to my house? :)

Love the quotes - soooo true! Did you actauly make those cookies?? If so, I'm so impressed...

Nomnomnom!

So true -- as a writer, I find it hard to read without taking notes. Occasionally, a book just drags me in and I forget to notice I'm reading. If I Stay by Gayle Forman was definitely in that category.

I have been putting great effort into my writing, and am immersed in a totally new writing venture that's teaching me so much ...

And those cookies! They're an artform of their own, wow!

I love this quote! When I read a book, and when I realize what tense, or POV the book is written in, then I know that the author didn't quite hit the mark. When I read a book, and later, can't remember if it was in first person, or present tense, but WHAT AN AWESOME STORY IT WAS, I know that the author spent a ton of energy making it flow so easily. :) Definitely something to aspire to!!

your blog is awesome i wish that i could come to your blog every day!!!!

So far this week I've done both :D

I'm still working on edits for chapter 28 and I just finished my latest reread of Patricia Brigg's book "Cry Wolf".

Fingers crossed, I'll be starting a new book soon. Not for NaNoWriMo, though. My plate is full enough for me, thanks. Maybe next year :D

Wonderful quote! Hadn't heard that one before... And what perfect cookies!

Love the quote, it's so true! And the cookies look delish. My sons and I just whipped out a box of those Pillsbury holiday ones that all you have to do is stick 'em in the oven....yum.

I view writing at times in the same way I used to view the practical tasks I was delegated when I used to work as an engineer. By this I mean that for a job/task to be signed off it had to be of a specific standard and when I write, say a poem, I know when it can "stand" when it works if you like and this takes time. For every piece the length of time will be different.
I love those cookies-or biscuits as we would call them, they remind me of the one's I'd get my children when they were younger as a treat, they called them party biscuits. i could eat one now!

Jessie-- Haha! The effort's what counts... right?

Angela-- Me, too.

Kristine-- Then my job here is done. :)

Brenda-- I'm the same way! Luckily the great effort done during revisions can completely fix a messy draft.

Leigh Ann-- Yes, agonizing can make all the difference, too. :)

Prerna-- Yay! I'm excited for you!

JeffO-- Hahahaha! Yep, it can totally feel like that. But writing new stuff-- that kind of give you the new-draft-high along with the making-it-all-better-high, so it's the best of both worlds, right?

Bea-- I know, right? I love when I hear that people are working hard on revisions for a past NaNo project! I don't know why, but it excites me every time.

Jennie-- I know! I keep staring, too.

Angela-- Have fun NaNoing! And eating sweets! And thank you so much for the blog award. So sweet!

Janet-- Makes you want to go make some, doesn't it?

Jenny-- Hahaha!

Kelley-- Here you go. Catch! (That's how we "pass" food here. ;))

Joshua-- Hahaha! You may have possibly made me snort at an inappropriate time when I read your comment.

Tara-- You definitely earned a reward. Here you go. ;)

Carrie-- I have a theory that says editing goes better when you stop to stare at some cookies for three minutes every once in a while. :)

Peggy Eddleman said...

Jolene-- I agree- that kind of editing is SO EXHAUSTING. And it seems like it takes FOREVER. And the payoff isn't as immediate, so it's so hard to keep going. And going. And going. And oh-my-goodness-will-i-ever-get-to-the-end going.

Iain-- Oh! Yay! Just what I hoped for. :)

Michelle-- Such an exciting place to put your efforts! Have fun!

Janet-- That's what I'm here for. To make you want cookies. :)

Susanna-- You know, I've been in need of a vacation...

Pat-- I did not, so you can quit being impressed. :) There's a link in the caption if you want to go really be impressed!

Amie-- You are so good to always take notes while you are reading! I am so impressed. And inspired.

Joann-- Oh my gosh! How fun and exciting! And I agree. Art.

Heather-- That is so true! I totally agree. I love when I am thinking about a book and can't even remember pov/tense. It's always when it's a completely remarkable book!

Anon-- Thanks! And you totally can. :)

Hannah-- Best of luck on all fronts! Reading, Revising, starting a new book. How fun!

LisaAnn-- I agree!

Cortney-- Yum!

Paul-- I love that. Holding your writing up to a standard to see if it measures up. Huh. Party biscuits. I like it! It fits.
