Books I read in 2013, and what I learned

I have a confession. I'm not the world's fastest reader. I'm not one of those people who can read a book a night. (Dangit!) In fact, it usually takes me a couple of weeks. This year, though, I decided that I was going to make reading more of a priority.

This year, I read 55 books. Or, on average, one every 6 1/2 days.

But not only did I read more this year, but I read differently. I decided that I wanted to read as many books as possible that were written by my fellow Lucky 13 authors. (We've all debuted in kidlit during 2013--- there's 101 of us! Click here to see all of our books.) Many of them I received as ARCs (advance reader copies), because we have a system where we sign up for the books we want to read, then when one comes to us, we read fast, then mail it to the next person on the list.

Remember how I said I'm not a fast reader? It definitely factored in to my reading choices in years past. Because I knew I wouldn't get through tons, I only read books that came highly recommended by people I trusted, along with the occasional book that I knew that appealed to me so strongly that I knew all on my own that they were going to be right up my alley.

But this year is different. I decided to read every book I could that was written by a Lucky 13, regardless of genre. Regardless of whether or not it's something I would normally pick up. Here's what I learned:
  • I like a lot of genres a lot more than I thought I would.
  • There are things to learn from every. single. book you read that will apply to the genre you are writing, even if it's nothing like the genre you're writing.
  • Not only will reading outside of your favorite genres still benefit your writing, but it will benefit it in ways that reading in your favorite genres cannot.
  • Getting to know someone as a person, and then getting to know them through their writing, will always fascinate me.
And here they are. All the books I read this year. (And for the first year EVER, all of the books I have read are kidlit.)

Middle Grade

Young Adult (Fellow Luckies from the Lucky 13s)

Young Adult (Fellow Leaguers from the League of Extraordinary Writers)

Young Adult (Others I've loved through blogging)

Do you keep track of the number of books you read each year? Do you ever branch out of your favorite genres? Did we read any of the same books?

Who would I be like?

I came across this poem that I wrote 7 years ago. I am not a poet by any stretch of the imagination, but this poem means a lot to me, so I thought I'd share.

When I think of Christ’s birth
In days long gone by
I wonder who I’d be like
If I had been nearby.

Would I be like the Innkeeper
So kindhearted and so good
That even though I didn’t have much
I’d still give all I could?

Would I be like the Shepherds
So humble and so mild
That the angels would come to me
to share news of the Christ child?

Would I be like the Wise Men
So dedicated and so meek?
That even though the way is long
It’s Christ I’ll always seek.

Or would I be like the travelers
So weary and unaware
Too distracted to know Christ is near...
Too busy to even care.

Christmas can get so hectic
While trying to make things great
This year I want to remember
That it’s for Him we celebrate.

I’ll remember with each gift I give
With every carol that I sing
With every star that I see
It’s about the birth of my King.

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope it's an absolutely wonderful one for you and yours.

Awesome things to check out

First lines are hard to write, no? Want a bunch (oh, say..... 49) as-current-as-it-gets examples? At the Lucky 13s, 49 of us share our first sentences of books we have coming out in 2014. Okay, seriously-- is there anywhere else where you could get that many examples of books so current they aren't even out yet? And from all different genres? Trust me: the list is FASCINATING. I keep reading it over and over-- it's that good. Definitely worth checking out.

I just registered for my very favorite conference yesterday-- Storymakers. Why is it my favorite, might you ask? For one, they bring the most incredible agents and editors. (This year it's Josh Adams, (Adams Literary), Daniel Lazar (Writer's House), Laurie McLean (Forward Literary), Eddie Schneider (Jabberwocky Literary), and Melissa Frain (TOR books).) And incredible presenters (Like the keynote speaker who's also doing an intensive workshop, Orson Scott Card, and Brandon Sanderson (also doing an intensive workshop). Plus amazing attendees. I've met some of my favorite writer friends there! I'm also thrilled to be presenting two classes this year-- The Parent Problem in MG, and Getting Inside the Head of a MG Kid. If you live in Utah, I highly recommend it. If you don't and a trip to Utah in the spring (pretty!) is doable, I highly recommend it.

Since you're here, I'm guessing you love books. And I'm going to assume that you love free books even more, especially if they just show up at your doorstep. Sound good? 43 of the Lucky 13s, myself included, are participating in a MASSIVE GIVEAWAY of epic proportions, including autographed books, advance copies, swag, critiques, and more! There's some seriously amazing stuff. Join the group now, and then Jan 1-7, there will be 6-7 giveaways A DAY.

And just for fun, this:

And then when you finish dying laughing, watch this:

All the laughing should boost your immune system for a good week or two. ;) Merry Christmas!

Book 2 Title and Release Date News!

It's official! SKY JUMPERS book 2 has a title! And a release date!

***Drum roll for the title****
Which, I've gotta say, makes me pretty happy. You see, most books I write don't have a title for a very long time. But back when Sky Jumpers was called Through the Bomb's Breath (which was its title for a very long time), I came up with a title for book 2 that would go along with it-- Across the Forbidden Flats. And that was BEFORE I EVEN STARTED WRITING IT. I know. It shocked me, too. So to have the final, official title have three of the four original words (especially considering what it took to get Sky Jumpers' title just right), is downright magical.

***Drum roll for the release date***

One day shy of a year after book one. The closest Tuesday to being exactly a year. Awesome, no?

And guess what? The paperback of Sky Jumpers comes out that same day!

No, I don't have a cover to share. No, I haven't even seen it myself. But the illustrator doing it is the same one that created the cover for book 1 so YES! I am dying to see what he comes up with! I have visions of waking up Christmas morning to an email with the cover image attached.

Maybe I'll have my daughter wrap up my laptop the night before and place it under the tree. My boys don't care at all if they know what they're getting for Christmas, but my daughter is a big believer in being surprised on Christmas morning. Plus, she still believes in Santa, so with her on my side, I just might get my wish. ;)

What do you have visions of waking up Christmas morning to?

Two Awesome Things

I am absolutely thrilled about two things today.

First, I got an email yesterday from my editor saying that SKY JUMPERS was chosen as one of the New York Public Library's 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing! It may have made me cry. Possibly more than once. Guys... People like Neil Gaiman are on the list. And I-- I-- Okay, do you know what? We need to change the subject, or I just might cry again.

How about let's change it to free stuff, just in time for Christmas?

At the League of Extraordinary Writers, we are having a HUGE year end celebration, where we are giving away some amazing books and swag from incredibly talented writers. People like Beth Revis, Lissa Price, Elana Johnson, Genn Albin, Mindy McGinnis, Lydia Kang, Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner, Lenore Appelhans, Bethany Hagen, Angie Smibert, Susanne Winnacker, E.C. Myers, Elizabeth Richards and me. FOUR PACKAGES of prizes total!

Come over to the League to see all the awesome and to enter. Best of luck to you all!

Sky Jumpers AUDIO giveaway + holiday swag!

Guys, I haven't blogged in FIVE WEEKS. Far cry from the days when I posted every week day, no? NaNo and school visits and family and holidays bucked me off the blogging horse. And then the horse ran away. I just barely managed to coax the horse back so I could jump back on. Such a long break calls for a giveaway, doesn't it?

Let's do it!

At the same time that Sky Jumpers released from Random House, the audio book released from Listening Library. The girl who reads it, Abigail Revasch, is INCREDIBLE. I have absolutely loved listening to her. So I'm giving away a copy of it on CD! If you win, you can consider it an early present for whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year. Or you can give it to that special child (or teacher!) on your list.

Giveaway starts Monday, December 2 and runs until December 7. Open internationally.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

How about one more giveaway? Are you thinking of giving Sky Jumpers away as a gift? If you are, email me at peggy @ peggyeddleman (dot) com with your mailing address, and I'll send you two free bookmarks (front and back pictured below) as well as a signed bookplate to include with your gift. Let me know in the email if you would like the bookplate personalized.

Happy holidays!

This NaNoNewb wants to know: Are you in?

I am a total NaNoWriMo Newbie. I've WANTED to do it a million times before, but November for me usually means being buried deep in revisions, peering out of my revisions cave every now and then in the direction of the NaNoWriMo camp, all wistful. (The last couple of years, I participated in NaNoReviMo instead. :))

But this year, the planets all aligned, and I AM IN! Who else is?

If you've done it before, do you have any advice for any of us NaNoNewbs? I think I could use all of the advice I can get, because I AM DETERMINED TO WIN.

If you're doing NaNoWriMo this year, friend me! My NaNoName is PeggyEddleman. Let's hang out with 117,000 other writers and write a bazillion words in a short amount of time together. It'll be a blast.

P.S. Want to see my query letter, read about how I wrote it and why it worked for my agent? Carl Hackman has a new series called Queries that Hooked an Agent, and he recently featured mine.

Quotes & Cookies: The First Time

"The beautiful part of writing is that you don't have to get it right
the first time, unlike, say, brain surgery."

~Robert Cormier

Ha! I have to admit, the term "Dude-- it's not brain surgery," has never come to mind in regards to writing for me. But dude, it's not brain surgery. It's SUCH a good thing to remember! Especially if you just came off intense revisions, where you made your book all pretty, and slaved over each sentence to make sure it flows just so and accomplishes heaps. (Erm-- anyone else really struggle most with remembering that a first draft stinks when you've just spent forever revising?)

So that's my new mantra, going right above my monitor. IT'S NOT BRAIN SURGERY. The first draft can be far from right, and that's just how it should be.

I was going to give us cookies. Honest. And then I saw this, and I wanted to sink my teeth into soft, gooey, crunchy, sweet, (is that sea salt?! yum!) salty goodness. So today is brought to you by Quotes and Caramel Apples.

Happy fall, everyone!
